A charity which supports nurses and midwives through financial and personal hardship has launched a new campaign which encourages people to celebrate and thank those working in the professions.

To mark Day of the Midwife (5 May) and International Nurses Day (12 May) 2024, Cavell has launched a month-long campaign called #ShowYouCare.

“Nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants are there for us, so we all have a reason to be thankful for them”

The fundraising campaign is asking people to donate to the charity and leave a message to let nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants know that people care about them.

It is designed to be a morale boost for the professions and nurses and midwives have been urged to use the hashtag on social media to discover the positive messages.

Chief executive at Cavell, Lewis Allett, said the charity was launching the campaign because “everyone needs to feel valued in their role and nursing and midwifery staff are no different”.

He said: “From the beginning to the end of our lives, nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants are there for us, so we all have a reason to be thankful for them.

“However, people often forget that they need help too – that’s where we come in.”

Cavell supports UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants when they are experiencing personal or financial hardship due to illness, disability, older age, domestic abuse and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis among other issues.

The charity offers support to those in crisis, through advice, signposting and referrals to specialist services, as well as one-off grants and emergency funding for those in need.

“Cavell supported 1,400 people and their families last year and our support team are busier than ever, with 80% of those receiving help being working nursing and midwifery staff,” explained Mr Allett.

“#ShowYouCare encourages everyone to share why they want to say thank you and let nursing and midwifery staff know they are appreciated more than they realise.”
